How I Maintain My 4B/4C Hair When Skiing
Skiing with natural hair? Whew. It took me a minute to figure this one out. Between the dry, cold air sucking the life out of my curls and the inevitable sweat from layering up and hitting the slopes, my hair was either dry and brittle or a frizzy, tangled mess—neither of which is cute.
But after a lot of trial and error (and I mean a lot), I finally cracked the code. And guess what? The key is to keep it simple.
Wash Day Prep: Hydration is Everything
Before heading out for a ski trip, I make sure my hair is in the best possible shape—moisturized and protected. My wash day routine looks like this:
- Clarifying Shampoo (only if needed) – If my hair has product buildup, I start with a good clarifying shampoo to reset my scalp and strands.
- Moisturizing Shampoo – Because hydration is the goal, I follow up with a shampoo that won’t strip my hair.
- Deep Conditioner + Hair Mask – This step is non-negotiable. I go for a mask with honey because it helps lock in moisture and keeps my curls soft and bouncy.
No Leave-In, Just Butter
I know, I know—leave-in conditioner is usually a must. But for my hair type (which is medium fine—not thick, not super fine, just somewhere in between), I skip it. Instead, I go straight in with my go-to hair butter that’s packed with rich, nourishing ingredients. This stuff is thick enough to seal in moisture and keep my hair protected for days without feeling too heavy.
The Protective Style That Works for Me
After my hair is fully prepped, I flat twist or cornrow it into 7-8 sections. Why? Because when I put on my ski mask and helmet, I want my hair to be flat and secure. No bulk, no movement, just a snug fit that keeps my helmet in place while I’m flying down the slopes.
Low-Maintenance for the Entire Trip
Once my hair is in its protective style, I don’t touch it for the entire trip—no unnecessary manipulation, no frizz-inducing adjustments. I keep my hair tucked away under my ski gear, letting the butter do its thing and keeping my moisture levels intact.
The Grand Finale: Twist-Out Perfection
On the last day of the trip, I finally take my twists or braids down for a soft, defined twist-out. The hair butter keeps my curls hydrated and juicy enough to last a day or two post-trip.
Once I’m back home, it’s straight to the shower for a clarifying shampoo session to get rid of sweat, buildup, and any lingering mountain air.
And that’s it—simple, effective, and no more dry, sad curls after a ski weekend. If you’ve been struggling with keeping your natural hair healthy while skiing, try this routine and let me know how it works for you!
