Natural Hair Care on the Trail

How I prep my 4ab natural hair for over night hiking and camping

Believe it or not, I’ve always been the natural hair girl who booked a stylist appointment before any trip. Knowing that my hair would be in a protective style always put me at ease, allowing me to focus fully on enjoying hiking and camping adventures.

So when my boyfriend invited me to join some friends on an overnight camping and hiking trip to Zion National Park (specifically, The Narrows) in Utah, I was thrilled. However, my last-minute attempt to schedule a hair braiding appointment was unsuccessful. As I searched the web for tips and suggestions on protecting my 4ab hair during outdoor adventures, I found limited information tailored to my needs.

Determined to figure it out, I developed a method that kept my hair moisturized throughout the trip.

First, I divided my hair into four sections and washed it using Mielle Organics Babassu Conditioning Shampoo, which effectively cleansed both my hair and scalp. Next, I deep conditioned for 15 to 20 minutes with TGIN’s Honey Miracle Hair Mask, a staple in my hair wash routine that replenishes moisture and aids in detangling.

After rinsing, I sectioned my hair again and applied the LOC (Liquid, Oil, and Cream) method. I sprayed a mixture of water and aloe vera juice onto my strands and followed up with TGIN’s Green Tea Super Moist Leave-In Conditioner for added hydration. Then, I applied Mielle Organics Mint Almond Oil for sealing in moisture and Carol’s Daughter Hair Milk Styling Butter for added nourishment.

Once the products were applied, I divided my hair into two sections and began flat twisting. I love this protective style for its simplicity, allowing me to easily re-moisturize my strands with TGIN’s Rose Water Curl Refresher while outdoors.

If you try this method on your next overnight hiking and camping trip, let me know how it works for you! Also, check out my latest post on skincare essentials.
