Run Like the Winded

I woke up 8 years ago, much like Forrest Gump, with an urge to run—and I haven’t stopped since. Now, as a retired marathon runner, I average about 8 miles a week. Running has become my therapy, helping me relieve the stress from long days at work. There’s something about hitting the pavement that clears my mind and brings clarity.

Since moving to a big city, walking has also become my main mode of transportation.

If you’re thinking about getting into running or incorporating it into your routine, don’t be intimidated! Here are some tips to get you started:

  1. Invest in a great pair of running shoes – Trust me, your feet will thank you.
  2. Quality running gear – Whether you’re facing the heat or the cold, breathable, weather-appropriate gear is a must.
  3. A good playlist or podcast – Music or a podcast can be a great companion during runs. I applaud those who run without any entertainment—you all are on another level!
  4. Find accountability – If you need motivation, try the Nike Run app. It offers free programs to guide you through your running journey.
  5. Join a running club – There were days I didn’t feel like running, but the cool people in my running club kept me inspired.
  6. Start small – Begin with walking or jogging intervals. Small steps can make running feel less intimidating and more approachable.
  7. Maintain a positive mindset – The hardest part is often just getting dressed to run. Once you’re in your gear, it’s time to put your feet into motion!
