As a Black woman who loves adventure, I’m always on the hunt for places that feel a little different from the usual travel spots. Whether it’s a place steeped in history, brimming with culture, or just a destination that’s off the beaten path, I’m all in. This time, I wanted something that would really push my boundaries—so I packed my bags and headed to Svalbard, Norway, for the Longyearbyen Ultimate Arctic Adventure. And let me tell you, this Arctic town is a whole vibe! Sure, I did all the research, but nothing could have prepared me for just how wild and beautiful the Longyearbyen really is.
Pushing Boundaries: Finding Strength in the Arctic
Exploring Longyearbyen wasn’t just another check on my travel list. It was about stepping out of my comfort zone—both geographically and personally. I found myself in places like Pyramiden, a town in Spitsbergen, Svalbard—an abandoned Soviet settlement—listening to stories of how the residents (fewer than 10) are slowly rebuilding and preserving the area. This journey reminded me of the strength it takes to step into the unknown.
Longyearbyen feels like it’s straight out of a sci-fi movie. You hear stories about polar bears roaming the streets and the fact that the entire town’s population is smaller than what you’d find at a packed concert. When I stepped off the plane, the Arctic wind hit me, and the sight of those towering mountains made me realize, “I’m not in New York anymore.” Despite all my research, I found very little about what it’s like to travel to this area as a Black woman. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find a bit of diversity here—not necessarily other Black folks, but a mix of different ethnicities that made me feel at ease. As a Black woman, safety and a welcoming environment are always top of mind when I travel, and Longyearbyen made me feel right at home. I felt free to explore without worry.
The Arctic Welcome: Arriving in Longyearbyen
Getting into town was easy. I hopped on a bus from the airport—170 Norwegian Krone for two roundtrip tickets, which, by Norwegian standards, is a bargain. The bus guide shared a treasure trove of information, including must-see spots like the Svalbard Museum and the Polar Bear pop-up exhibit, along with essential safety tips, like sticking with tour guides who are armed (because yes, polar bears are a real concern here). The bus made stops at all the hotels, making the transition seamless.
We chose to stay at Funken Lodge, a hotel that perfectly blends modern comfort with a touch of historic charm. It’s perched on the upper side of town, offering stunning views of Longyearbyen and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. From the moment we arrived, I knew we had made the right choice. The rooms were stylish and comfortable, and the staff went above and beyond to make us feel at home. They shared local tips and ensured we had everything we needed for our Arctic adventure. Whether we were unwinding by the fireplace after a day of exploring or enjoying the delicious breakfast each morning, Funken Lodge was the perfect base.
After settling in, we headed straight to the restaurant for some tea and snacks—because exploring on an empty stomach? That’s a no-go.
Local Vibes: Experiencing Longyearbyen’s Culture
The locals in Longyearbyen were incredibly welcoming. They shared stories about life during the endless winter nights and even gave us tips on how to stay warm (layers on layers, y’all!). That evening, after checking out the different restaurants, shops, and bakeries, we made our way to Kora, a pub that was the perfect spot to relax and soak in the local vibe. We left around 10:00 p.m., and the sun was still high overhead, a quick reminder that we were in the land of the midnight sun.
Adventures Await: Pyramiden and More
One of the highlights of the trip was a tour to Pyramiden, an abandoned Soviet coal mining town that’s equal parts eerie and fascinating. We booked the tour with Polar Charter, and from the moment we stepped on the boat, I knew we were in for something special. The staff on board were incredible. They made the experience feel personal and engaging, even with around 30 tourists on board. They also shared stories about the area’s history and facts about local wildlife. We even spotted minke and beluga whales along the way!
Travel Tip: If you’re planning a visit, pack the essentials: solid hiking boots, an insulated jacket, outdoor pants, and a good hat. We were lucky with a mix of sunny and cloudy weather, but it can get windy, especially on excursions.
From Glaciers to Whales: Unforgettable Activities in Longyearbyen
When we finally arrived in Pyramiden, it felt like stepping into a time capsule. There were miners offloading bags of coal into the back of a truck. We met with our guide, who gave us the do’s and don’ts and urged everyone to stay close to the group because days before, polar bears were spotted around the perimeter. As we entered the town, there were “Welcome to Port of Pyramiden” posters and a large Pyramiden structure. We wandered through the abandoned buildings, imagining what life must have been like when this place was thriving. While you can stay overnight in the town’s hotel, we chose to explore and then head back. On the return trip, we visited a nearby glacier—a breathtaking sight that might not be around for much longer, thanks to climate change.
Another highlight of the trip was visiting Barentsburg and Esmarkglacier. If you have the time, I can’t recommend the tour enough. Also run by Polar Charter, this day trip takes you to a small Russian mining settlement and then to a breathtaking glacier. It’s the perfect way to soak in more of the Arctic’s natural beauty. Barentsburg is the second-largest settlement in Svalbard. Our guide said the coal mining town had about 530 residents before showing our tour group around. While visiting the glacier, our group witnessed pieces of it cracking and falling into the water. It was mesmerizing to see, but also heartbreaking. The guide said what I had been thinking—that with the rate of climate change, this glacier might not be here much longer.
Unwinding After the Adventure
After all that adventure, a visit to Huskies Café in Longyearbyen was just what we needed. We treated ourselves to hot tea and some cinnamon bread while getting to know the friendly huskies that call the café home. Soon after, we met some fellow travelers over dinner at the Radisson Blu Polar Hotel. There’s something about the shared experience of Arctic travel that brings people together. The conversations flowed easily, and we ended the night with a visit to Karlsberger Pub (KB Pub to the locals) for a nightcap and more storytelling. It was the perfect way to wind down and reflect on our Arctic adventure.
Final Reflections: A Powerful Reminder of Connection
Despite the remoteness of this Arctic town, the warmth and openness of its residents reflected a cultural mosaic that felt surprisingly familiar. Their stories of life in such extreme conditions offered a new lens through which I could view the world—one that values community and survival in ways that resonate deeply with our own histories. It reminded me that no matter where we are, the need for connection and resilience is universal. It was a powerful reminder of the delicate balance of our world and the importance of preserving these natural wonders.
